There’s no easy way to put it: American farmers are in trouble.

Our farmers have lost more than $30 billion this year. A new farm bill to help them is stalled in Congress due to Democratic obstruction. Four years of rising input costs and excessive regulation under Biden have left many family farms on the brink of extinction.

The good news is that America will soon have a Farmer’s Friend back in the White House. President-elect Trump has delivered victory after victory for our farm families during his first term, and I know this is one of his top goals for his second term. But as the saying goes, talent is policy.

That’s why we need President Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rawlings, confirmed as soon as possible.

Trump appoints Texan Brooke Rawlings as agriculture secretary

Brooke and I worked together in the White House, and she and I were part of a group of women empowered by President Trump to fight for his America First vision. As director of the Domestic Policy Council and the Office of American Innovation, Brooke steered policy across every issue area and helped the president unleash the greatest economy in American history.

She made a special effort to eliminate cumbersome red tape, such as the Waters of the United States policy, which President Obama hopes will regulate every stream, creek and waterhole in the United States.

For Brooke, farming is more than just knowledge. She grew up in a small farming community in Texas and comes from generations of hard-working American farmers. She studied agriculture at Texas A&M University and spent the early part of her career working to protect the interests of farmers. She was a member of 4-H and FFA and raised steers with her four children.

U.S. agriculture is expected to be the next frontier of cybersecurity in the new year, experts and lawmakers say

Not long ago, I toured farms in Delta, Arkansas, with John Bozeman, Arkansas’ senior senator and incoming chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. After a long day of meetings with farmers, we held a roundtable in McGee, Arkansas. I have long known that our farm family was struggling, but this incident made that crystal clear.

One by one, farmers at the table told me how their neighbors and relatives had quit farming and had to scramble to find work elsewhere. They talk about how prices for everything from fuel to seeds are rising, but the market prices for their row crops are not keeping up. They describe it as a generational crisis.

I have always believed that farming is more than just a business. Especially in a place like small town Arkansas, it’s a way of life. It’s our state’s culture, our history, and it’s what binds communities like McGehee together. If our farmers disappear, something so central to the spirit of Arkansas and America will disappear with them.

Brooke knows this fact, and she’s ready to do something about it. I know the first item on her to-do list is working with the new Republican majorities in the House and Senate to pass an updated farm bill — legislation that hasn’t been overhauled in a decade. I know she will work to eliminate regulatory red tape that limits our farmers and turns a difficult job into an impossible one.

I know she is committed to improving broadband and connectivity in our small communities and helping rural Arkansas connect to the world. I know she will work hard to realize President Trump’s vision of American dominance — in food, energy and everything else.

My father once said that if a country cannot feed itself, fuel itself, or fight for itself, then it cannot survive. It is no exaggeration to say that we are very close to this point, and we need a significant change in leadership to turn things around.

Brooke Rollins is that leader. Confirmed Brooke as Secretary of Agriculture. Stand up for American farmers. Protect our agricultural industry and our nation’s way of life.
