The Gulf of Mexico will now appear in the U.S. divide under the Trump administration’s executive order to rename the waters to “Apple (AAPL) Map” and Google (GOOGL) Map. Apple will update its MAPS app today (February 11) to reflect the first reported changes by Bloomberg, which Google made the mapping changes yesterday.

The Gulf bordering Mexico and the United States has been known as the Gulf of Mexico since the 16th century. Trump ordered the official U.S. map to update the name to the U.S. Gulf in January in recognition of its “critical importance” to the U.S., and his executive order also insists that Denali, the highest mountain in North America, has restored its former name McKinley Hills.

Google announced last month that it would update its Google Maps “quickly” to comply with the changes to both names, once they were updated in official government resources, such as the Geographic Name Information System (GNIS), the policy was described as “long-term” Practice” company. The company followed this week, announcing that changes have begun to reflect this update.

Now, Google Maps users in the United States will see the Gulf known as the “Gulf of America”, while users in Mexico will still see the “Gulf of Mexico” and all other countries will see the “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)).” Google says , Country location is determined by the mobile user’s phone operating system and device location and the selected search settings area for web users, the website also updated its Google Earth system to include new tags.

Apple told Bloomberg that Apple Maps will be suitable for U.S. users today, noting that the change will also be launched for global users in the future. Apple did not respond to observers’ request for comment. Meanwhile, Denali’s name change has not appeared in GNIS and has not been updated on Google Maps or Apple Maps.

On competitor mapping systems like Bing Maps owned by Microsoft (MSFT), the Gulf of Mexico’s name has not changed yet. Microsoft, which has been silent on the issue so far, has not responded to observers’ requests for comment.

Google Calendar Shard Pride Month and Black History Month

Maps aren’t the only part of Google’s changes in recent months. Google Calendar for mobile and web users no longer includes previously cited holidays such as Pride Month, Black History Month, Indigenous Month, Jewish Heritage, Holocaust Day and Hispanic Heritage, such as The Verge’s first report.

Google said in a statement that it began simplifying the number of holidays on the calendar last year as they realized that “it is not scalable or sustainable to keep hundreds of moments manually and consistently around the world.” Although the company has long-term It has been drawing holiday and national observations from a website called timeanddate.com, but a few years ago it began manually adding other global cultural moments. “In mid-2024, we are returning to timeanddate.com’s public holidays and national commemorations around the world, while allowing users to manually add other important moments,” it said.
