FDA sets risk levels for more than 2 million Madegood Granola Bar cases

The Food and Drug Administration has updated its recall of more than 2.4 million Madegood Granola bars in December, warning consumers about adverse health risks associated with the recall.

Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the parent company of the organic snack maker, voluntarily recalled the product because they could be contaminated with metals.

According to Madegood, the metal was originally from small flat bristles used in the manufacturing process, and it said it received seven complaints that prompted the recall. Madegood said in announcing the decision.

While harm has not been reported for those who consume identified products, the FDA will rate the recall at a “Class II” level this month.

What is the FDA’s Level II recall?

The second type of recall is reserved for products that may “cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences” to bring them into contact with their consumers. The FDA said in these cases, “serious adverse health consequences are out of reach” opportunities.

This is more serious than a Level III recall, where the use of a recalled product is unlikely to have adverse health consequences. Level I is the most serious category of recalls because it is reserved for products with “reasonable possibilities” to cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

For Madegood products, the FDA believes that food “may contain metal fragments” is the reason for the classification.

The recalled products are produced between January and November 2024 and are distributed in Canada, the United States and other international markets. Madegood said in December that a “isolated issue” that prompted the recall during the manufacturing process had been corrected, adding that it worked with retailers to remove affected products from store shelves.

“We have addressed the root causes of the problem and have made voluntary recalls in the knowledge of regulators,” Madegood previously said.
