Rolf Harris' dementia-struck wife is unaware disgraced entertainer has died
The widow of Rolf Harris is reportedly unaware he has died.
The convicted paedophile and disgraced entertainer’s 91-year-old widow Alwen is battling dementia and does not know that her husband died earlier this month aged 93 following a battle with neck cancer.
The Australian presenter was released from prison in 2017 after serving three years of a five years and nine month sentence, having been found guilty of 12 counts of sexual assault, one of which was later overturned.
As reported by Australia’s Daily Telegraph, Harris is believed to have told his daughter Bindi to ‘look after your mum’ days before his death on May 10.
He apparently said: ‘I always believed we would go on longer together but, if I go first, promise you’ll take good care of your mum.’
It’s thought Alwen, who is receiving 24 hour nursing care, is still living in their £7 million mansion in Bray, Berkshire.
The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before this death, and Alwen always stood by her husband’s side even after he was jailed in 2014 following his arrest the previous year after the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal broke.
Harris denied any wrongdoing and was released on bail without charge, but he was later arrested again and charged with nine counts of indecent assault dating to the 1980s.
The charges involved two girls between 14 and 16 years old, as well as four counts alleging production of indecent child images in 2012.
In December 2014, the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that Harris – once a beloved entertainer known for the likes of Animal Hospital and Cartoon Time – was facing three further counts of sexual assault.
The new charges were of alleged assault against females aged nineteen in 1984, aged seven or eight in 1968 or 1969, and aged fourteen in 1975.
Harris pleaded not guilty to all charges but was found guilty of all 12 counts with one being later overturned, and he was sentence after the judge said he showed ‘no remorse’.
After his release from prison he was diagnosed with neck cancer, and in October 2022 it was reported he was ‘gravely sick’ with carers needed to monitor him at home.
In a message released through Harris’ solicitor, his family confirmed his death and said: ‘This is to confirm that Rolf Harris recently died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest.
‘They ask that you respect their privacy. No further comment will be made.’
