Martine Rose Draws Inspiration From Rave Flyers and Posters For SS22

London-based designer Martine Rose likes to do things a little differently. Whether it’s her deconstruction of hyper-masculinity in 2020, or the continued referencing of her Jamaican heritage and the community she lives in each of her collections, Martine Rose has become one of the stand-out British designers of recent years.

Now, returning for Spring/Summer 2022, Rose looks at “Carefree Dancing” and “Alive With Pleasure” artworks from 1990s rave flyers — as well as the airbrush Athena posters of the ‘80s — to showcase a surreal lookbook that’s a collision of images which together represent the Martine Rose character.

Trompe l’oeil effects resembling classic denim washes adorn various leather pieces this season, as color-blocked leggings are remixed as trousers in shades of “Ocean Blue” and “Pale Lime”.

Famed illustrator Syd Brak’s 1982 “Long Distance Kiss” poster for Athena inspires telephone prints on satin shirts and trousers, while paint-splashed tracksuits recall styles worn by ravers in the 1990s. Other highlights include notched, sliced and braided football tops, as well as track jackets and short-sleeved shirts with tucked silhouettes.
