Empire State Building grabs flak again, illuminated green in support of eagles
In the words of Yogi Berra, it’s déjà vu again. This time may bring New Yorkers deeper.
The Empire State Building lights up on the Green in support of the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday night. Saquon Barkley played for the NFC East rival New York Giants until the 2024 season, scoring two touchdowns.

Landmark’s X account showed a video of the building rising in green.
“I’m sorry I had to do this,” the post read. “Shine in the @eagles colors in honor of their NFC Championship.”
The account makes it clear that this will also be lit in the colors of whoever wins the AFC Championship, but it doesn’t seem to be that important. Fans criticized the building being illuminated in support of Philadelphia’s NFL team, seeing it as a betrayal of the city.

Two years ago, the Empire State showed support for the Eagles when the team defeated the San Francisco 49ers to advance to Super Bowl LVII. The building was also lit red for the Chiefs when they won the AFC Championship that year.
For what it’s worth, New York’s football team hasn’t had much to be happy about in a long time.
The Giants finished the 2024 season with a 3-14 record after letting Barkley enter free agency. They have had one playoff appearance in the last eight seasons.
The New York Jets finished the season with a 5-12 record. The Jets have not participated in the playoffs since the 2010 season.
