U.S. Surgeon General links alcohol to cancer risk in new advisory

The U.S. Surgeon General has issued a new advisory warning about alcohol-related cancer risks.

Dr Vivek Murthy issued the guidelines on Wednesday after studies found a link between alcohol and at least seven types of cancer.

The advisory specifically states that cancer increases the risk of cancer of the throat, liver, larynx, esophagus, mouth, larynx (throat) and colorectal cancer.

“Alcohol is a recognized, preventable cause of cancer, responsible for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths in the United States each year, exceeding the 13,500 alcohol-related traffic deaths in the United States each year – yet most Americans do not Be aware of the risk,” Murthy said in the advisory.
