“It’s definitely a life-changing event,” May, 27, told Los Angeles Times In an interview published Friday, February 14, he recalled his health panic.
May plans to return to the Dodgers last summer after surgery on Tommy John Revision after a flexor tendon in mid-2023.
The athlete recalled “very close” to the Dodgers’ comeback when a piece of lettuce brought him back further. May explained that on July 10, 2024, he went for supper in Arizona, where he was rehabilitating at the Dodgers Camelback Ranch facility.
He ordered a salad, took a bite, feeling the lettuce trapped in his throat. May said he knew what was wrong when he tried to wash it with water.
“This is definitely very serious,” Mei told the media, sharing that his esophageal tears needed emergency surgery that night.
May initially thought he would be fine after 15 minutes in the restaurant. But once home, his wife Millieexpress concern about this situation.
“I’m not a big swingman. A little refrigerated. So I thought, ‘I’m fine. I don’t need to do anything,” he remembers.
May’s wife insisted that they go to the emergency room to “check out”, which was when he had a CT scan. The test showed how severe the tears were, and he was rushed into the surgery.
“If I didn’t, I probably wouldn’t have done this all night,” he said of the procedure, noting that the surgery wasn’t “very common” and that it was definitely an “emergency” situation.

MLB players have resumed the Dodgers roster before this spring’s opening day, but, he won’t soon forget about the fear of health.
“It gave me a different view of a lot of things in my life,” May said. “Just seeing how things related to Base Ball can go away in a second. And what my wife has experienced, surely Give it to me [a feeling] “Wow, things can change that way.” It’s absolutely terrible. ”
He added that his goal is to be healthy enough to return to the bullpen this season – but nothing. “I just need to go out and prove it [I’m ready],” probably explained.
Mei joked that it had been “a minute” because he was healthy enough to play. “But I’m absolutely excited and definitely have a deeper appreciation for this game,” he concluded.
