Washington hinted he was quitting Hollywood after completing several film projects.

In November, the Oscar winner announced on Australia’s Today show that his Hollywood career was coming to an end.

“For me, it’s about being a filmmaker, especially at this point in my career,” Washington said.

“I’m only interested in working with the best people. I don’t know how many more movies I’m going to make – probably not that many. I want to do something I haven’t done yet.”

He went on to discuss upcoming roles, including Shakespeare’s Othello on Broadway. Washington first played the role at the age of 22 and was scheduled to play Othello for a third time in the film adaptation.

Washington has booked several other projects, including playing the Carthaginian general Hannibal in an upcoming Netflix project, a movie with director Steve McQueen and a role in the third “Black Panther” movie.

The actor announced that he will also play the role of King Lear in another film.

“After that, I’m going to retire,” Washington said.

While Washington’s retirement rumors sent his passionate fans into confusion, he clarified his remarks days after the TODAY interview.

“I didn’t say I was retiring,” he told BuzzFeed. “I said it had to be a certain level of interest for me. I was more interested in the behind the scenes, so that was about five years later.”

“It’s very difficult. I may have used the word ‘retirement,’ but I divide my life into three parts: study, make money, and come back. I’m in the comeback phase of my life.”
