If you’ve decided that 2025 is the year you’ll finally improve your golf game, you might realize that actual practice is a great place to start.

However, with a busy schedule, finding time to practice can be difficult, and when you’re simply hitting a ball on the range, Do Actually having time is not an ideal strategy.

So, what’s a promising high-handicap player to do? According to Top 100 teacher Krista Dunton, the key is to break your practice time into digestible chunks. For example, for a 30-minute range time, you should maximize efficiency by dividing the time into three distinct sections: mechanics, target practice, and performance under pressure.

“The first 10 minutes should be spent on technique and any keystrokes that are technically beneficial to you,” Dunton says. In other words, now is the time to put these improvement tips into practice, whether it’s your turn, transitions, or takeaway key ideas.

For the next 10 minutes, Dunton said, it’s time to focus on one goal.

“That’s when you start doing your pre-shot routine just like you would on the golf course,” Dunton said. “Be prepared, take one last look at your chosen target, and pull the trigger.”

Minimizing errors is key to breaking 90 points.

The last 10 minutes build on what you’ve been practicing, but should also include a bit of stress. In this section, you should not only pick a target and complete a complete routine, but you should also change clubs between shots and maybe even envision playing a hole in sequence. Dunton says practicing in this way means you’re ready to continue the lesson.

“If you can get into the habit of practicing this way, in three 10-minute segments, it will make your golf much easier,” Dunton says. “How can you expect to perform well on a course if you haven’t trained? But if you practice correctly and train yourself to use a proper routine, it will be much easier to achieve this goal.

Dunton’s practice suggestions will also help you maintain good technique between shots and avoid the monotony that can occur when you’re mechanically hitting dozens of balls. By being thoughtful about your practice time, even short bursts of practice can make your overall progress worthwhile.
