Julia Stiles recalls what it was like working with Heath Ledger

“You know, when you’re starring in a big movie for the first time as an actress, you need to feel comfortable with another person,” Styles said. “He was very generous in that regard.”
Stiles and Ledger played high school sweethearts in the film, which also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Cameron James), Gabrielle Union (chastity), Allison Janney (Ms. Purkey), David Kruholz (Michael Aikman), Larissa Oleinik (Bianca Stratford), Andrew Keegan (Joy Donnell) and susan may pratt (Mandela).

Ledger died of an accidental overdose in 2008 at the age of 28. A toxicology report released at the time showed that Ledger died of “acute intoxication caused by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine.”
Reflecting on filming with Ledger, Stiles said her character Kate Stratford’s paintball date with Heath’s Patrick Verona was “really, really fun.” Styles also noted that the scene in which Kate reads her poem aloud in class elicited an emotional response.
“In the scene where I was reading the poem, I didn’t expect to start crying or tearing up or getting choked up, whatever,” Styles recalled. “But it only happened because the movie was wrapping up and production was wrapping up. I think I was very moved by the whole experience.

“I have a lot of great memories of that movie, but they’re all disappearing because it’s been 20 years,” Stiles said. “But it was a very special moment and we were all very excited.”
She added: “This is my first big job and I really love this role because I’ve never seen such a dynamic teenage girl character before and it feels really refreshing and I really Very happy to be a part of it”.
