College athlete dies in tragic accident on ski resort’s most difficult route

A 19-year-old college student died in a skiing accident in Massachusetts on Tuesday.
Alex Kemp, a freshman from Williams College in New Jersey, was at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock, Massachusetts, on Monday when the incident occurred, the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. ski.
Officials received a 911 call about the accident on the left side of Cutter Trail at 2:39 p.m. Monday.
“The caller stated that Mr. Kemp had gone over the embankment and appeared to have suffered a severe head injury,” according to the release.

Ski patrol was immediately dispatched to the scene and paramedics attempted to rescue Kemp. He was taken to Berkshire Medical Center and later transferred to Baystate Medical Center for further treatment, but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Tuesday.
The District Attorney’s Office said Kemp was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, adding, “There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in this incident.”
According to the Jiminy Peak trail map, the Cutter Trail is a black diamond trail marked “hardest” for expert skiers.

Kemp, an avid runner, came to Williams from Christian Brothers College in New Jersey after being recruited to the cross country team, Williams College President Maude Mandel said in a statement Wednesday.
“As a runner, Alex is fearless and motivated in both training and competition. But even if he doesn’t have his best day, he feels genuine joy in seeing his teammates perform well. and pride,” his cross country coach Dusty Lopez said in the university’s statement.
“Our thoughts and hearts are with his family, his high school teammates and coaches and everyone who had the privilege of knowing Alex,” Lopez continued.

The late student also aspired to complete a PhD in computer science and was studying political science and economics.
“Alex is one of the best students I have ever taught in my 21 years at the College,” Dukes Love, Kemp’s economics professor, said in a statement.
During high school, Kemp volunteered frequently, including at a camp where he helped disabled children ride adaptive bikes as a step toward independence.

Kemp’s own words from his college application essay include: “Everyone needs someone to support them and remind them to always have their back.”
“This was the spirit described by many who knew him,” Mandel concluded in the university’s statement.
