China says it will build relationships with Canada on the basis of mutual respect

Beijing (Reuters) – China will continue to establish bilateral relations with Canada, the Foreign Ministry said.

Carney, a central bank that never held an elected position, won the leadership contest with 86% of the vote and will succeed Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning gave a speech at a regular press conference on Monday, congratulating Carney, while urging Canada to cooperate with China to promote the improvement and development of relations.

“We hope Canada will abide by an objective and rational understanding of China and adopt a proactive and pragmatic policy toward China,” Mao Zedong said on Monday.

Carney’s victory came just in Beijing that it announced tariffs on Canadian agriculture and food worth more than CAD 2.6 billion on Saturday in retaliation for the launch of Levies Ottawa in October.

The taxes scheduled to come into effect on March 20 match the 100% and 25% import tariffs imposed by Canada on China-made electric vehicles and steel and aluminum products.

Mao Zedong believed that China’s countermeasures were completely “legal and reasonable”, telling the Canadian side to correct its “wrong practices” and to provide a fair, non-discriminatory and predictable environment for businesses in both countries.
