Willow Smith Opens Up About Polyamory on 'Red Table Talk,' Interested In Throuple with Male and Female Partners

While Jada understood where her daughter was coming from, “Gammy” had some questions.

Polyamory and throuples were the topics of the day on "Red Table Talk," subject matter Willow Smith was very excited to dive into. Her grandmother, on the other hand, had some trouble understanding anything other than a conventional partnership.

After explaining in a voiceover that a throuple is an "honest romantic relationship with three people" and not simply based on sex, Willow laid out why the idea of polyamory is appealing to her. Talking about the "insecurity and fear" that comes with being in a monogamous relationship, Smith said those are issues "we need to evolve out of and transmute into something new and different."

"Monogamy, I feel — and this is just for me — I feel actually inhibits you from learning those skills of evolving past those feelings of insecurity," she continued. "That feeling of ‘Oh, no, you can’t do this… if you were to do this, the world would crumble on both sides.’ There’s just no freedom, it’s all fear based."

She went on to say she finds the concepts of marriage and monogamy "steeped in this idea of ownership," and adding that they can be oppressive to women.

Adrienne Banfield Norris admitted the idea of polyamory was "off-putting" to her and something she knows is not for her. When asked how she’d feel if Willow were to enter into a trouple, she added, "I would not be excited about that."

"I would not. It doesn’t sit well with me. It doesn’t sit well with me because I feel like I don’t understand this ’emotional commitment,’" she explained. "At the end of the day, I don’t feel like that’s what it’s really about. In my mind, I’m feeling like they’re just trying to enjoy sexual relationships with other people. Just call it what it is."

Willow, however, noted she would be interested in being in a throuple, specifically one with both a man and another woman.

"This is the thing, there’s so many different kinds of people in this world and so many things to learn, so many people to learn from and I don’t see the benefit in not learning those things or not putting myself in a position to learn as much as I possibly can from as many people as I possibly can," she explained.

Noting that, yes, some people have the wrong intentions when being polyamorous, she’s down if "your intention is to create more love, more understanding, more community, more compassion in your life."

"I really couldn’t see myself in a quadruple," she noted, "but personally, male and female, that’s all I need. One of each."

She later added, "I love men and women equally. I would definitely want one man, one woman. I feel like I could be polyfidelotous with those two people. I’m not the kind of person who is constantly looking for new sexual experiences. I focus a lot on the emotional connection and I feel like if I were to find two people of the different genders I really connected with and we had a romantic and sexual connection, I don’t feel like I would have the need to find more."

Jada had no problem with Willow’s words, saying, "Whatever makes you happy." She added, "I always tell her, never be afraid. You have to live who you’re not to know who you are."

In Jada’s mind, she has been part of a throuple for years — a "non sexual" one with Will Smith’s ex wife, Sheree Zampino. When asked if she’d be interested in joining one at this point in her life, she said she would be … with boundaries.

"Hell yeah. I could do a throuple," she explained. "I couldn’t probably be romantically engaged with somebody else, but I can only have sex with one person. I’m sexually monogamous. Maybe back in the day, you know what I mean. Today, I could have only one."

She then clarified that it might have to be a quadruple, with additional male and female partners to keep things "equal."

The episode ended with Gam saying she was "enlightened" by he conversation, which included a chat with two women and a man in a three-way relationship.

Oh yeah, Jada also revealed she’s had a threesome once — watch the whole episode below!
