Olly Murs accent confuses fans at Coronation concert

Olly Murs performs at Coronation Concert

X Factor singer Olly Murs, 38, showcased a new vocal technique at the Coronation Concert this evening.

The Troublemaker star pumped up the crowd with his upbeat track and energy, but fans of the concert were struck by how different he sounded.

Viewers tweeted: “Olly is American now” and “Olly Murs is the new Liam Payne with the American accent.” (sic)

Some fans could look past his accent tweeting: “I love Olly and I know he sings in an American accent but he’s at the KING OF ENGLAND’S Coronation guys.” (sic)

The BBC recorded a quick interview with the two fans who revealed they had appeared 12 hours before the concert to watch the Essex-born singer.

The two girls, Jess and Rachel, said they wanted “to be prepared” because they wanted to see “King Olly”.

The singer retweeted the post on Twitter and Instagram, tagging the two fans with a caption “Love this”.

Olly was joined on stage with a live band and several backup dancers.

Dressed in an all-white suit complete with a white flower and black shoes, he showcased an energetic performance as he jumped along to Dance with Me Tonight.

Speaking backstage, he revealed that he wouldn’t be stripping to show respect and remain professional in front of the Royal Family.

Having shared his excitement to perform at the concert on social media, Olly took to Instagram to explain that he had been nervous about performing at the King’s celebration.

He revealed that he went to the gym prior to getting over his adrenaline but was “feeling ready and pumped”.

He shared that it was a “really special moment for [him]” and thanked everyone for the “kind messages and support and love”.

The singer documented his journey to the concert with several funny snaps and videos.

In one particular short, he showcased a very aged Olly as he joked that the trip to Windsor took a long time.

The singer also revealed the details of a boozy Coronation after-party during an interview with Sky News.

After the performance, he shared that the “atmosphere was incredible” and that he was “honoured, truly, to be invited and to be asked to be singing here and to get everyone moving and dancing and having fun”.

He added that his mother was in the crowd, and his grandmother had watched from home.

The singer’s performance was soon followed by the 300-strong Coronation Choir organised by Gareth Malone performed.

Other acts included Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Take That, Lang Lang, Tiwa Savage and Nicole Scherzinger.

Viewers can catch the full show on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
