Kate Winslet Said Leonardo DiCaprio 'Hated' Kissing Her in 'Titanic' and 'Complained Bitterly' About Their On-Screen Kiss
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio became the best of friends while filming Titanic. And while Jack and Rose may share one of the greatest cinematic love stories of all time, the actors who portray them are strictly platonic. In fact, their relationship is so sibling-like that, according to Winslet, DiCaprio hated kissing her throughout the movie. She says that he complained about it endlessly.
Yet DiCaprio, on the other hand, has a different perspective.
Kate Winslet was terrified to work with Leonardo DiCaprio initially
Before getting cast in James Cameron’s masterful film, Winslet was just a 19-year-old girl from a small town in England. She worked at a sandwich shop and was constantly bullied by her peers for wanting to act in movies. Meanwhile, DiCaprio was already a Hollywood star. (Back then, he was best known for his roles in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? and Romeo + Juliet.)
Winslet admits in an interview with Oprah that she was incredibly intimidated by the thought of working alongside DiCaprio. She thought she might end up falling in love with him amid their on-screen romance. But fortunately, Winslet realized how down to earth he was, and they immediately hit it off as buddies.
“I was like probably how all the women in this audience are about Leonardo DiCaprio,” she told the talk show host. “Initially, I thought, ‘Ugh, how am I gonna work with this beautiful man, who is such a brilliant actor?’ And I met him, and he’s honestly so lovely and down-to-earth and normal and so good at what he does.”
Kate Winslet says Leonardo DiCaprio ‘hated’ their kissing scenes, but Leonardo DiCaprio says otherwise
In a 2004 interview with Oprah, DiCaprio was asked to name his favorite on-screen kissing partner. It didn’t take him long to come up with an answer: “I’m going to go with Kate Winslet,” he said. “Good old, classic…”
But despite his sweet answer, Winslet was quick to deny it. In an interview with Extra, she said, “I can tell you right now he hated it,” she revealed about their kiss. Winslet continued, saying he would “complain bitterly” during their lip locking scenes.
DiCaprio responded, saying the only thing he “hated” was the fact that their makeup would “swap” amid locking lips. Apparently, DiCaprio says they had different colored foundations, and the kissing scenes would ruin their makeup.
The ‘Titanic’ actors are best friends to this day
It’s been decades since Titanic initially premiered in theaters, yet Winslet and DiCaprio are still the best of friends. Winslet has even called DiCaprio her “closest friend in the world.”
Need proof? According to Winslet, they still text each other Titanic quotes on a regular basis.
She revealed to Glamour,
“We found ourselves saying to each other, ‘Can you imagine if the world really knew the stupid things we say? I’m not going to tell you what we actually talk about, but yeah, we’re very, very close, and sometimes we do quote the odd Titanic line back and forth to each other because only we can, and we find it really funny.”
It doesn’t get much sweeter than that, folks.
