Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds, 27, appeared on the BBC Two show with professional dancing partner Nikita Kuzmin, 24. Her typical bubbly self, Ellie went on to tell host Rylan of a serious fall she had in rehearsals, as the pair started preparing for week six in the competition. Ellie revealed that she fell on her bum after an over enthusiastic lift meant she missed her feet, leaving her a bit worse for wear.
Laughing through the pain Ellie explained: “I had a bit of a land. I fell on my bum and it was really with a thud.
“I am sitting here now and it really, really hurts!
“I have had trouble sitting down all day because of how we landed, it was a right thump.”
Making Rylan chuckle, it was clear Ellie and Nikita’s fall was not going to put her place in the competition at risk, but it still took the wind out of her at the time.
She continued to say: “I didn’t want to get too upset because I knew we had to go straight into it.
“But I am feeling the effects of it now!”
Explaining more about why Ellie took the tumble during rehearsals in the first place, Nikita said that it was Ellie’s Paralympic spirit that means she “launches” herself into potentially dangerous lifts.
He added: “She is launching herself into lifts. She is going for them!
“I think it is her Paralympian hunger; she just goes for it.”
Interrupting her partner, Ellie exclaimed: “Well you have the power to lift me, so I do fly!”
Before going on to say:” It was how I landed, I should have landed on my feet and not my bum!”
Quickly wrapping up the story Ellie and Nikita also shared their joy at being kept in the competition, thanking viewers for voting for them.
It comes after Ellie appeared emotional on the Strictly results show, after having convinced herself that she would be in the dance-off.
Dressed as Velma Dinkley and Shaggy Rogers from the American TV series Scooby Doo, the pair scored 29 points out of a possible 40 for their Foxtrot, leaving them in a dangerous position on the leaderboard.
Despite worrying, Ellie and Nikita sailed through to next week’s show, but it was when the couple were speaking to host Claudia Winkleman that the athlete became overwhelmed with emotion.
“Now Ellie, you’re quite emotional,” the host pointed out as Ellie replied: “Yeah, I am very much so because we were in the bottom two of the leaderboard.”
As she turned to Nikita, struggling through tears, he continued: “We were ready for the dance-off.”
Ellie admitted: “I had a double espresso thinking I’m going to be in the dance-off.” As their co-stars laughed, the gold medal-winning swimmer added: “We just want to thank everyone so much for the love and support, don’t we?”
Nikita finished by saying: “We’re extremely grateful, it’s truly special we get to do it here and get another week.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
