Doctors respond to Hilary Duff's claim she got eye infection from Covid tests

Doctors have poured cold water on the idea you can get an eye infection from having ‘too many’ Covid-19 tests, after Hilary Duff recently claimed she ended up in the hospital after having the procedure done numerous times.

The Lizzie McGuire star had been taking regular swabs after returning to the set of her series Younger, however according to Hilary she had to seek medical attention after her eye started looking ‘weird’ over Christmas.

Sharing a round-up of what she’d been up to over the holidays, the star reassured her fans that her eye is fine since being prescribed antibiotics to treat the infection.

She said on her Instagram Story: ‘Then my eye started to look weird…. and hurt …. A lot… Sooo….

‘Took a little trip to the emergency room. I got an eye infection from all the Covid tests at work…. Cuz you know, 2020, and all.’

She added: ‘PS…. My eye is fine, needed antibiotics.’

However, doctors have responded to Hilary’s infection and insisted it’s not possible to get a bacterial infection, such as an eye infection that needed anti-biotics, from a Covid-19 swab.

Dr Claudia Pastides, Babylon GP, told ‘I don’t know the details of Hilary’s eye infection but her comment “My eye is fine, needed antibiotics” implies that she probably was diagnosed with a bacterial conjunctivitis (eye infection).

‘Covid-19 is a virus and not a bacteria that causes eye infections.’

Dr Pastides added: ‘I’m not sure how you’d catch a bacterial eye infection from doing multiple Covid-19 tests. The tests are done by placing a swab into your throat and nose and require you to wash your hands well before and after.’

Dr Keith Grimes, Babylon GP, simply responded of the risks associated: ‘The swab can be a little uncomfortable, but if done as described presents no risks.’

In England, mass testing in various areas across the country has been hailed as a way out of the crisis, with the Government recently sharing expectations UK’s daily coronavirus testing capacity will more than double in early 2021, when two new ‘megalabs’ open.

Hilary has recently been filming the seventh season of her TV series in New York, where she was photographed on set with her co-star Sutton Foster.

The series was due to shoot early in 2020 but had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, with all production in Manhattan suspended. The cast had revealed that filming resumed at the start of October, with Nico Tortorella, Peter Hermann, Miriam Shor, Debi Mazar, Molly Bernard, and Charles Michael Davis also starring.

It comes after Hilary was forced to quarantine away from her kids late last year after being exposed to coronavirus.

‘Exposed to covid Quarantine day 2 Fml,’ she wrote on social media, as she kept fans up to date.

She ended up testing negative for the virus, she was reunited with her brood in November, posting a picture of herself hugging her kids, writing: ‘Not totally in the clear but looking positive and by that I mean negative!’
