Dianne Buswell, 32, was partnered with comedian Robert Webb, 49, for this series of Strictly Come Dancing, but yesterday he made a statement announcing his departure from the competition due to “ill health”. Among fans’ dismay over Robert’s sudden exit, there were also calls to have his Peep Show pal David Mitchell come and take his place.
Seeing notoriously dry and reserved comedian David take to the dance floor would be an unmissable event for many Mitchell and Webb fans.
David, 47, took to Twitter today to address any rumours that might be circulating about him replacing his friend Robert on the popular BBC One show.
To his 2.3 million followers he wrote: “This is sad!”
“They did some really brilliant dancing, I thought.”
“Sorry there won’t be more,” he continued.
“And to those asking if I’ll be stepping in to replace him: I’m afraid not.
“I prefer to dance like nobody’s watching.
“And I can only do that if nobody’s watching.”
Dianne then issued a speedy response to the tweet, sharing her thoughts on the subject with her 161,900 Twitter followers.
“You know I would be more than happy to teach you a tango,” she typed.
Many fans on social media seemed keen to see David have a go at dancing with Dianne.
“Petition for Mitchell to replace Webb on strictly,” wrote Twitter user @rossnotts.

Twitter user @ThisBeSteveD commented: “Come on David, do it!
“We need to see you and Diane busting this move out. (sic)
“It’d be so Rainbow Rhythms!” he finished, attaching a gif from Peep Show of David dancing manically.
Dianne’s dance partner Robert underwent open-heart surgery only two years ago and the intense, rigorous training process of Strictly clearly proved to be too much of a strain on him physically.
In a statement released yesterday afternoon, the Peep Show star revealed that he had an urgent consultation with his heart specialist after experiencing worrying symptoms, at which point it was recommended he should withdraw from the competition.
The star expressed that he was “extremely sorry” and that he “deeply regrets” letting Dianne down.
Following his official statement he took to Twitter to address his 529,500 followers: “Very sad to be leaving.”
“Huge thanks to Dianne for being so brilliant and to everyone for watching (and voting!)”
