Virgin Radio Breakfast host Chris Evans, 54, was absent from his show earlier this week, with stand-in host Sam Pinkham telling listeners the former was off sick after falling ill last weekend. He later informed fans the DJ was in hospital after experiencing stomach cramps. After undergoing a test, the father-of-five discovered he had a kidney stone.
I thought I had trapped wind and general man pain
Chris, who is now at home resting, has opened up about his illness.
He told Express.co.uk: “[I] thought I had trapped wind and general ‘man pain’ most of Saturday.
“Took paracetamol and waited for nature to take its course. That didn’t happen. Late Saturday night my wife called 111 and we were advised to go to A&E. Which we did.”
He added he then underwent an ultrasound and CT scan, adding: “It was clear I had a kidney stone on the move.
“I was subsequently admitted to a ward where I was looked after until I came back home on Monday evening.“
The radio DJ added he still has the stone and will need to go back to hospital to have it removed if it doesn’t come out soon.
Chris went on to thank the “awesome” healthcare professionals who looked after him.
“All the NHS doctors, nurses, porters and consultants were typically amazing, professional, warm, caring – all wrapped up in their usual blanket of selflessness and hilarity.
“Thank you; Shirley, Gabriella, Dan, Sister Sue, Alex, Hazel, Violet, Rose, Fernando, Jessie, Louise, Juna, Molly, Mr. Robinson, The great and powerful Mr Bhardwa, Paul from the RAF (who was helping out due to COVID).
“Plus, anyone else I may have met/talked to/annoyed but can’t remember because I was pretty much out of it for the first few hours,” he added.
Speaking further of Paul, he added: “Paul from the RAF has, along with countless other service personnel, been drafted in to help relieve some of the pressure within our hospitals, doing whatever is necessary wherever they can.
“Something I had no idea was happening.”

On Monday, Chris’ Virgin Radio co-stars Sam and Vassos discussed a text the latter received from him while he was in hospital.
After sending him a good luck message on the radio, Vassos said he had heard from Chris and that he was in “good spirits”.
“He texted me. Although, I’m not sure what drugs they’re giving him in the hospital,” he said.
“He texted me to say that I’m the Steve Jobs of the Breakfast show.”
Chris is currently resting at home ahead of his return to the show on Monday.
He lives with his wife Natasha, their sons 11-year-old Noah, seven-year-old Eli and twins Walt and Boo, who were born in 2018.
He is also a dad to Jade, 34, who he shares with ex-fiancé Alison Ward.
