California holiday crackdown nabs more than 100 retail theft suspects

A statewide crackdown on retail crime resulted in the arrests of at least 117 people suspected of stealing nearly $40,000 in merchandise, according to authorities.
The California Highway Patrol and several other police departments conducted the operation on Dec. 20, arresting 117 people and recovering $38,000 worth of drugs, according to a press release from Gov. Gavin Newsom. dollars in stolen goods.
Two firearms and three stolen vehicles were also seized, according to the release. The arrested suspects are expected to be charged with a range of offences, including petty theft, grand larceny and organized retail crime.
Authorities recovered 767 stolen items, including clothing, perfume and shoes, officials said. CHP works with 10 California law enforcement agencies and 56 retail partners.
“Through proactive enforcement and strong collaboration with local law enforcement and retailers, we can protect the state’s businesses and consumers during one of the busiest times of the year,” CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee said in a press release expressed in. “Our efforts send a clear message: retail theft will not be tolerated in California.”
CHP works with the Hemet Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Glendale Police Department, Bakersfield Police Department, Woodland Police Department, Walnut Creek Police Department, Livermore Police Department and San Ramon Police Department Cooperate with the police department.
