Bill Belichick’s North Carolina contract details reveal surprising salary, interesting terms

Bill Belichick had already begun recruiting players, but after signing his contract, it was officially announced that he would be North Carolina’s next head coach.
This is a contract with eye-popping numbers.
The Tar Heels announced Belichick’s contract on Thursday, which runs through the end of 2029. The 72-year-old will make $10 million per season, although his official base salary is $1 million.

Another $9 million will come from so-called “supplemental revenue.”
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, instantly became one of the ten highest-paid head coaches in college football. According to USA Today, there are seven coaches earning $10 million or more in 2024.
The nation’s highest-paid coach is Georgia’s Kirby Smart, with more than $13 million per season. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney ($11.13 million), Texas’ Steve Sarkisian ($10.6 million), USC’s Lincoln Riley ($10.043 million) and Ohio State’s Ryan Day (1,002.1) who just won the national championship million) ranked among the top five.

Like many other contracts, Belichick’s contract has incentives that if met will result in a massive payday, including a $750,000 bonus if the Tar Heels make the College Football Playoff. If they win the national championship, Belichick will receive a $1.75 million bonus.
Other incentives include a $150,000 bonus for reaching a bowl game and a $350,000 bonus if the team reaches an “elite” non-playoff bowl game. These include the Pop-Tarts Bowl, Gator Bowl, Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and more.

Finally, Belichick, who is ranked in the top 25 at the end of the regular season, will also receive a $250,000 bonus. If the Tar Heels finish in the top 25, he hopes to receive $350,000 in Elite Bowl bonuses.
It has also been confirmed that Belichick does have a buyout clause, which North Carolina has widely reported to have in place if he were to leave for the NFL. If Belichick leaves UNC before June 1, the university will be owed $10 million. After June 1, the acquisition amount dropped to $1 million.
However, despite being reportedly contacted by multiple NFL teams, Belichick said during his introductory press conference that he would remain in Chapel Hill.
