Britney Griner says new 3-on-3 league will put pressure on WNBA to ‘do better’ on its players

With the new “Unbeatable” league set to begin later this month, one perennial WNBA All-Star believes it could lead to changes in women’s basketball.
Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner recently told ESPN that she is one of 36 WNBA players traveling to Miami to compete in a 3-on-3 league that will give the game a “different look.”
“[Unrivaled] It brings something new to women’s basketball,” Griner said. “They’re trying to give us a different look, a different feel. We can bring everyone together in one place. They’ve really invested a lot. Unparalleled shows that you don’t need a lot of time to put resources together to put out a great product.

The WNBA has seen a huge jump in ratings and attendance, and it’s clear that Kaitlin Clark was the catalyst. Despite Clark’s presence, it took WNBA players a long time to push for more.
Last season was the first time the team had charter flights, and the average salary was still just under $150,000 (Clark’s salary was $86,000, but she made millions through other endorsement deals).
Urivaled players will reportedly earn more than $220,000 for participating, and the season only lasts two months.

“Hope it helps [WNBA] Attract more viewers, more [corporate] Partners. It will definitely bring more pressure to everyone [WNBA] Honestly, do better,” Griner said.
Griner’s Mercury teammate Kahleah Cooper agreed.
“I think it’s definitely going to be stressful. It’s awesome,” Cooper said. “I’m grateful they were able to put some pressure on what we deserve and what we’re pushing for.”
Clark won’t play in conference play; she hasn’t been away from basketball for long since before her senior year at Iowa begins in late 2023.
