Winter storm expected to bring snow to Northeast

A fast-moving winter storm is expected to dump snow across the Northeast on Sunday, with at least half a foot of snow expected from Maryland to Maine, National Weather Service forecasters said Saturday.
The heaviest bands of snow could fall north and west of Interstate 95, where accumulations could reach 8 inches, according to the weather service.
Up to five inches of rain could fall in the New York City metropolitan area.
Snowfall rates can reach up to an inch per hour in some areas.
Heavy lake effect snow is also expected along the eastern shores of the Great Lakes.
Forecasters said the storm would begin early Sunday in the Appalachian Mountains, move northeast through the region throughout the day, and dissipate by Monday morning.
A winter storm warning – issued when hazardous weather is possible for the next day – was activated across the region on Saturday.
Behind the storm is a mass of arctic air that is expected to bring several days of frigid weather to much of the country starting Monday.
The prediction prompted organizers of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration to move the event indoors.
