Angels, Sebastian Rivero agree to minor league deal

Angels sign catcher Sebastian Rivero The MLB.com trade log reflects minor league contracts signed last month. It’s unclear whether he will be invited to major league spring training.

Rivero is 26 years old and has two seasons of major league experience. He hit .167 with 73 home runs in 34 games for the Royals in 2021-22. Kansas City released him after the ’22 season. The Venezuelan-born catcher has spent the past two seasons in the upper minors, splitting his time between the White Sox and Braves. A year ago, he hit .186/.239/.249 in 75 games at Double-A and Triple-A in Atlanta’s system. Rivero has been playing winter ball, batting .182 in 21 games.

While clearly not having much offensive upside, Rivero adds receiving depth to the upper levels of the minors. During his minor league career, he started nearly 400 games and logged nearly 3,500 innings. Rivero has reduced his base-stealer attempts by about a quarter each of the past two seasons.
