Buying a house in this economy? Actually, it might not be a terrible idea if you go the flat-pack route found with many of the tiny houses all over Amazon — and thus, avoiding too many lumber tariffs; it could cost you a fraction of the average house price in the U.S. (which is just over $350,000, according to Zillow). Case in point: this two-story container house is listed at Amazon for under $50,000, less than a quarter of the current median home price.
Keep in mind, however, that this is the starting price, and serious buyers will likely settle on a higher number to make this 400-square-foot abode the house of their loftiest dreams. This tiny dwelling is ripe for customization, so buyers can flex their design muscles to make it home sweet home.
2-story Container House

The house, sold by Amazon seller Smith & Andrea Mart out of Bangladesh, is two stories measuring 20 by 20 feet, with two bedrooms that each measure 10 by 10 feet. Despite its small footprint, the base model also includes two bathrooms, a 100-square-foot kitchen, and a 200-square-foot living area. That doesn’t even include the spacious porch and second-floor balcony pictured. For a “tiny” house, it’s practically a mansion.
Enticing extras include the beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows allowing natural light to pour into the space and an internal spiral staircase. The prefab home reportedly comes with a toilet, shower, and bathroom sink, and it also has built-in cabinets and a countertop that seats a couple of people in the open-plan kitchen; buyers are responsible for all appliances, from the fridge to the washing machine.

Its galvanized frame and polystyrene-insulated sandwich-panel walls come packed flat like Ikea furniture, and the seller claims five people could put it together over the course of just two days. But the seller recommends using some pretty serious resources, including a forklift and crane. Plus, you’ll need to contact a plumber and electrician to handle your hookups.
Full disclosure: Travel + Leisure has not tested this house or interacted with the seller about assembly specifics, so we recommend doing plenty of research before committing to DIY installation.
