Alabama AD makes case for Crimson Tide to reach College Football Playoff

The Alabama Crimson Tide will find out Sunday whether they make the 12-team College Football Playoff, despite failing to make the SEC Championship Game this season.

Alabama did not participate in the conference tournament weekend, and Georgia defeated Texas in overtime to win the SEC. Additionally, Alabama might have clinched a playoff spot had Southern Methodist defeated Clemson, but Dabo Swinney’s Tigers shockingly won the ACC title.

Now, Alabama’s fate rests in the hands of the College Football Playoff selection committee. Greg Byrne, the school’s athletic director, made the case for including Alabama.

“Strength of schedule matters,” he wrote on X.

“Six of our eight wins have come against bowl-eligible teams and against some of the top teams in the SEC, including SEC champion Georgia.”

Byrne also included a chart that shows Alabama ranks No. 3 in opponent winning percentage, No. 17 in ESPN schedule strength, and has three wins against teams ranked in the College Football Top 25 poll.

Alabama finished the regular season with a 9-3 record.

Alabama is ranked No. 11 in the penultimate College Football Playoff rankings. The Miami Hurricanes were the first team to look in from the outside.
