Alabama AD advises football team to re-evaluate non-conference schedule after missing CFP

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne expressed regret over the Crimson Tide’s exclusion from Sunday’s College Football Playoff and suggested the football program reconsider its non-conference schedule.
Byrne pointed to the Crimson Tide’s schedule advantage during the season, which explains why Alabama deserves to make the playoffs with a three-game losing streak over a team like Southern Methodist. Byrne made this case before the rankings were announced, but the selection committee didn’t take the bait.

That raises questions about whether strength of schedule matters to officials deciding brackets.
“Disappointed with the result and consider us one of the best 12 teams in the country,” Byrne wrote on performance is not as good as it should be.
“We said we need to see how the CFP evaluates the strength of the schedule. With that result, we will need to (evaluate) how many P4 non-division games are meaningful in the future to put us in the best position.” Positions are not a good thing for college football.
Alabama is ranked No. 11 in the penultimate edition. But they don’t have a division title up for grabs. If Southern Methodist beats Clemson, the Crimson Tide could be a tournament team.

Alabama misses College Football Playoff, fans cheer
College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel explained why SMU was selected.
“The debate you had on television really summed up the debate in the room,” he said on Down South every Saturday. “We looked at the number of wins Alabama had against ranked opponents. We looked at SMU’s schedule and they were undefeated in the conference. Their losses were against ranked teams. But we also looked at Alabama’s losses Case for unranked teams.

“But overall, from the way SMU performed in that game, the missed field goal in the last second, Clemson had a great win, a great game. We just felt like SMU was in this situation. Recognition was still obtained under special circumstances.
