After a month of tragedy and uncertainty, search for Hannah Kobayashi finally ends

Hannah Kobayashi’s month-long search ended this week after her family said they found her safe.

Previously, the Los Angeles Police Department said it had traced the Maui woman into Mexico and that she appeared to be safe and there were no signs of foul play.

Here’s the timeline we know.

November 8

  • Kobayashi landed at Los Angeles International Airport from Maui and missed his connecting flight to New York City, according to his family. The Los Angeles Police Department said Kobayashi intentionally missed the flight, but her family disputes that.
  • Relatives receive cryptic text messages from Xiaolin, suggesting that someone is trying to steal her money and identity.
  • Kobayashi spent the night in Los Angeles and showed up the next day at Taschen Bookstore near the Grove Mall.

November 10

  • According to a statement from his family, Kobayashi can be seen in the video attending the LeBron 22 workout experience near The Grove before returning to Los Angeles International Airport. Kobayashi also posted a black and white photo of the event on Instagram.

November 11

  • Kobayashi was seen talking to a ticket agent at LAX; her family said she boarded the LAX Subway C Line at the Airline/Century Station near LAX around 9 p.m.
  • She transferred at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station in South Los Angeles and can be seen leaving the Pico station near downtown with an unidentified person.

November 12

  • According to his family, Kobayashi appeared again in the video at the Union Station Greyhound bus terminal in downtown Los Angeles around 6:30 a.m.
  • Just hours later, Kobayashi entered Mexico through the San Ysidro border crossing, according to police. Los Angeles Police Department officials said they reviewed U.S. Border Patrol surveillance footage from Dec. 2.

November 24

  • Authorities discovered the body of Xiaolin’s father, Ryan, near Los Angeles International Airport. He flew to Los Angeles to help search for his daughter. Authorities characterized his death as an apparent suicide. Hannah’s relatives released a statement saying: “Hannah’s father, Ryan Kobayashi, tragically took his own life after searching tirelessly for 13 days in Los Angeles. This loss has greatly heightened the family’s pain.

December 3

  • Los Angeles Police Department officials said there was no evidence of criminal activity in Xiaolin’s disappearance and that video showed her crossing the border into Mexico.
  • The Los Angeles Police Department classified her as a “voluntarily missing person” and said there were no signs of foul play.
  • Kobayashi’s family said in a statement that they would not give up the search and urged law enforcement and the public to “remain focused on finding her and avoid drawing speculative conclusions.”

  • Her family released a statement saying Xiaolin had been found safe. “We are beyond relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe,” the statement said. “The past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we ask that everyone please respect our privacy as we take time to heal. and processing everything we’ve been through.”
  • It’s unclear where Kobayashi was found or why she disappeared.
