A year after Elon Musk bemoaned the electric car giant’s lack of market share geographically, Tesla offers free supercharging of Model 3, Y in Japan – Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA)

What happened: Tesla now says on its Japanese customer website that customers who buy a Model 3 sedan from the company after January 1 will receive five years of free Supercharging. However, customers have until March 31 to pick up their cars.
Similar offers apply to new Model Ys in the company’s inventory.
Model 3 starts at 5,313,000 yen ($34,055) in Japan, while Model Y starts at 5,950,000 yen ($38,138).
Why it’s important: In January 2024, Tesla CEO Musk It lamented the company’s lack of market share in Japan, calling it “very low.”
The CEO said the company will not spend too much money on advertising, but will invest in regions such as Japan to deploy Superchargers and set up service centers in suitable locations.
“Japan is the third largest auto market in the world. So we should at least have a market share comparable to other non-Japanese automakers like Mercedes or BMW, which we don’t have right now,” Musk then said explain.
In October, the company opened its 600th Supercharger in Japan, aiming to build electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the country.
