Rep. Laurel Libby after Maine Speaker deletes X account

Maine House Democratic Speaker Ryan Fecteau deleted his X account early Thursday morning after denouncing Republican Rep. Laurel Libby.
On Tuesday night, the Democratic majority condemned a recent social media post against Libby, noting that a trans high school athlete won the women’s competition. The condemnation resolution passed by a 75-70 vote and revoked Liby’s speech and voting privileges.
Fecteau said at the hearing that Libby’s rights were not restored until after the apology, but she told him she would not apologize that night.
Libby noted that Fecteau’s account has been deactivated in Thursday’s X post.
Libby wrote with a screenshot of his deleted account page: “Obviously, the House Speaker of Maine doesn’t like hearing the voices of the people. … State Speaker Ryan Fecteau deleted his X account less than 48 hours after the Democratic majority attempted to cancel my attempt.”
Fox News Digital and Fecteau reached out to comment.

Fecteau left his Facebook and Bluesky accounts, but has not resolved the situation with Libby or deactivated his account. Many of his posts on these platforms are filled with comments from those who criticized his decision to condemn Libby.
One user commented on Fecteau’s latest Facebook post: “You’re a coward. Apparently an inverted, ruthless, coward, obviously hates young girls.”
Another Facebook user commented: “When Trump and Republicans are Nazis and want dictatorships, you will express effective concerns about expressing their constituents. Highlight the usual hypocrisy of Democrats.”
Fecteau has served as Speaker of Maine since 2020. When elected in December 2020, Fecteau was the youngest active state spokesman in the United States at the age of 28 and the first publicly gay man to serve as the president of the Maine Legislative Council.

Fecteau passed Libby’s condemnation on Tuesday based on the premise of her social media post about trans athletes.
Libby’s post identified the post of trans athletes when she noted that a trans track and field athlete ranked first in Maine’s women’s pole vault after a kid-game race a year ago.

“It’s a great double standard because there are public photos of this person in many places on social media, even in some places posted by his school, so yes, this post spreads, but it’s a guy who is on the public, they are on the podium and they are receiving a championship and accepting that title medal, which properly belongs to the second place girl.”
In the vote on Tuesday, Libby also prepared a seven-page speech to protect the importance of women and women’s movement from transgender violations. But, all night, her microphone was turned off while she tried to give a speech.
“From my first sentence, I was completely unable to speak a message and then before the other party closes me,” Libby said.
Libby’s revelation for trans athletes sparked a national conversation and reported on the state’s policy on transgender after Maine announced that it would not comply with President Donald Trump’s recent executive order “No Men in Women’s Sports”.
