Brian Matus dies – MLB trade rumors

Matus is a lefty who starred at the University of San Diego. In 2008, the Orioles drafted him fourth overall. The next year, he completed 32 rotations. Matus posted a 4.30 ERA in 175 2/3 innings and finished fifth in American League Rookie of the Year voting.

After some struggles over the next two seasons, Matus moved to the bullpen. He pitched about 50 innings each season from 2013-15 and posted an ERA of 3.53 or better. Baltimore traded Matus to Atlanta early in the ’16 season. The Braves released him without playing in a game, but he returned to the majors with the Cubs later in the year. Matus ended his career in Mexico’s third division and independent ball.

In parts of eight seasons, Matusz pitched to a 4.92 ERA in 528 2/3 innings. He won 27 games and struck out 462 times. He started 69 of 280 games in Major League Baseball (MLB). MLBTR expresses its condolences to Matusz’s family, friends and former teammates.
