Footage from local surveillance cameras in Miyazaki, a city with a population of about 400,000, showed buildings and houses shaking violently.
A tsunami warning with a maximum height of 3.2 feet (1 meter) was issued for the southern Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. A 0.7-foot (20-centimetre) tsunami was later recorded hitting the city of Miyazaki, public broadcaster NHK reported.
NHK said there were no abnormalities at the Ikata Nuclear Power Plant in western Japan and the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, referring to the two plants closest to the quake.
