MagSafe won’t be phased out by new EU directive: Here’s why MacBook owners need not worry – Sony Gr (NYSE:SONY)

The EU USB-C directive has officially come into effect, mandating the use of universal charging ports for electronic devices.
What happened: The directive, effective from 2025, requires phones to be equipped with USB-C ports.
All 27 EU member states have until December 28 to incorporate the directive into their national laws. The regulations cover a variety of devices, including cell phones, tablets, digital cameras and portable speakers.

Laptop manufacturers have until April 28, 2026 to comply. However, certain high-power devices, e.g. Sony Group Corporation sony Playstation 5are exempted.
In addition, the directive stipulates that devices capable of charging at higher voltages or currents must support USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). This affects the following brands one plus and OPPO.
The European Commission is also allowing new devices to be sold without chargers to minimize waste. Graphics on retail boxes will show whether a charger is included to help consumers adapt to the new regulations.
