Store clerk shoots and kills armed robber, sheriff says

A store clerk shot and killed an armed robber in Chesterfield County on Saturday night, the Chesterfield County Sheriff announced Monday.

According to a news release, around 8:45 p.m., police were called to an armed robbery at the Highway 9 Mini Mart and Tobacco Shop on Highway 9 in Page Land. A man was shot and killed inside the store.

The clerk told deputies the man entered the store and put a gun to his head and demanded money.

The clerk pulled out his pistol and fired several shots at the robber.

Staff confirmed the incident occurred after viewing the store’s surveillance video.

Sheriff Campbell Street said South Carolina law states that “a person who is not engaged in illegal activity and is attacked elsewhere where he has a right to be present, including his place of business, is under no obligation to retreat.” and the right to stand his ground and confront with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or serious bodily harm to himself or another person, or to prevent the commission of a violent crime.

“Chief Street strongly supports the rights of our citizens to protect themselves,” the release said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division responded to the scene.
