Former Trudeau adviser cast doubt on Canadian PM’s future after Trump floats Wayne Gretzky idea
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former senior adviser expressed pessimism about the world leader’s political future, just days after US President-elect Donald Trump floated NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as a possible replacement Queen of Heaven.
The countdown to Trudeau’s inauguration as president began earlier this month after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from cabinet. On Friday, Trudeau’s former chief adviser Gerry Butts said it was “unlikely” that Trudeau would lead the Liberals in the next election.

Freeland’s resignation is a major blow to the party and could mean Trudeau’s political fate is sealed, Butts wrote in the Substack newsletter.
“If, as is now widely expected, Mr. Trudeau is about to resign, then the only way forward is a genuine leadership campaign,” Butts wrote via The Canadian Press.
“If you want to know who can play hockey, have a hockey game. It doesn’t matter who you think you’re rooting for at this point, if we see these guys live, we’ll all have a more mature perspective.”
Butts was Trudeau’s principal secretary when he won the 2015 election.
“I just left Wayne Gretzky, ‘the great man in hockey. I said, ‘Wayne, why don’t you run for prime minister of Canada and soon to be governor general of Canada – you Will win easily, you don’t even need to campaign,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Since Freeland resigned, Trudeau has faced calls to resign. Trump also weighed in on Freeland’s departure.
Trump had previously suggested Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, and later posted on his Truth Social website: “Great Canada is shocked when the Finance Minister resigns or is fired by Governor Justin Trudeau.”
“Her actions are completely toxic and are not conducive to a deal that is beneficial to very unfortunate Canadian citizens. We will not miss her!!!”
According to Reuters, John Williamson, chairman of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, said lawmakers will begin meeting on January 7 to consider a vote of no confidence in the Liberal government. The vote must pass the House of Commons to defeat the government.
Reuters reports that the Canadian Parliament will reconvene on January 27.
