The highway’s guardrail was still hanging in the air through the 40-foot-wide (12-meter) hole, which opened Thursday morning when an abandoned mineshaft collapsed under the highway’s right shoulder, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The sinkhole forced motorists to take a short detour near the Wharton School, about 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of New York City.

Crews have stabilized the area and begun digging. The highway department said Friday they would work around the clock to repair the road.

The department said the opening of the eastbound lanes will depend on the scope of repairs and incoming weather. Motorists should continue to expect delays and use alternative routes.
