Seven hospitalized after American tourists in Fiji drank cocktails at resort

An American and six others, including at least four Australians, were hospitalized in Fiji on Saturday after drinking pina coladas that may have had alcohol spiked at a hotel bar, according to Fiji officials and global reports.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliam Gavoka confirmed the hospitalization of seven people at a press conference on Sunday. Gavoca said the victim developed nausea, vomiting and urinary system problems after drinking alcohol at the five-star hotel in Warwick, Fiji.
“As of 12:25pm today, two patients have been discharged. … Two HDU, High Dependency Unit patients… will be cleared for discharge this afternoon following another medical review. Both patients are currently in the ICU Hospitalized and in stable condition,” Gavoca said.
Fiji’s Ministry of Health and police are investigating and found that no other cases had been reported as of Sunday. Government officials will continue to investigate the cause of the tourists’ illness.

Gavoca added that Fiji’s tourism industry was “generally very safe” and that the island had never had a similar incident before Saturday.

The Deputy Prime Minister also confirmed that tourists have been drinking pina coladas, which he described as a “very popular cocktail” based on rum and containing pineapple juice.
Officials are working to complete a toxicology report, which will include more information about the ingredients consumed by the victims.
The Warwick Hotel Fiji told Fox News Digital in a statement that the hotel was “aware of recent news regarding suspected alcohol poisoning.”

“Considering what they’ve been through, they’re doing fine,” David Sandow said of his daughter and granddaughter in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday. “…It was an ideal holiday for mother and daughter, they enjoyed each other’s company and we all love Fiji as a family. So it was a logical place to go and they had a great time.”
Sandow said the mother and daughter had planned to spend a week’s holiday in Fiji, but it was cut short due to hospitalization and decided to fly back to Australia.
“There was a group of people in the lounge at this resort who drank… similar cocktails, and unfortunately seven people developed the symptoms that we’re talking about,” the grandfather said.
