Royal Caribbean crew shows off small cabin

Bryan James is a guitarist for Royal Caribbean who posts popular videos on many social media services.

He often shares behind-the-scenes glimpses into crew life. On many crewed cruises, the musicians on board are in an interesting middle ground.

For example, on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, a solo guitarist or Schooner Bar piano player enjoys the same privileges as a passenger. They can eat in the passenger area, hang out with the audience after the show, and even use the pool and hot tub.

They are also cast members because they have some of the same training and requirements as non-entertainers. They also face the same medical requirements and are bound by the same code of conduct.

Solo musicians also have solo cabins, sometimes located in the passenger area. They can order room service for the same fee that passengers pay, but they don’t have access to traditional room butler service. In most cases, crew members lucky enough to hold this position will pay a housekeeper to clean the room and change sheets and towels once or twice a week.

James was both a solo guitarist and in a band, so he had his own room that he had to share with another band member. This was much nicer than the cabin where most of the crew lived.

In a popular TikTok video, he takes viewers on a tour of each class of crew cabin, from the smallest cabin to the spacious cruise director’s cabin.

Royal Caribbean crew cabins from small to large

Transcript:

There are many different types of cabins available for crew on cruise ships.

I’ll show you the rooms from smallest to largest.

Okay, let’s start small. These are single stocks. You have your own space, but you share a bathroom with other people. Many crew members want to stay in this cabin because of its privacy. Yeah, you share a bathroom, but you have your own space, which is like, oh, that’s gold on a cruise ship.

Speaking of privacy, you won’t get it in one of these rooms. This is a bunk bed room for two people. Sure, it’s bigger, but you’ll be with a stranger who may be from your department, may not be from your department, maybe you have a similar background, maybe you don’t have anything in common.

You just get what you get.

Couples often request this cabin because it has enough space and then they can stay together.

Then we have the single cabin. This is what everyone wants. It’s very similar to the last cabin, except it’s built for one person. The bed is relatively large. It’s a fold-out bunk, and if this was your cabin, you could have anyone come visit you.

Now, one of the best cabins on the ship is the Cruise Director’s cabin. Everyone wants it, but only one can have it.

It’s two separate rooms, it’s kind of like a little kitchen here, and then you have a big old porthole with seating. You can hold meetings here. You can have a party, I mean whatever you want, and then have a space that is just your bedroom.
