Agricultural Secretary cancels $600,000 in grant to learn menstrual cycles in transgender men

Secretary Brooke Rollins said Friday that the USDA canceled a $600,000 grant to study the menstrual cycle of transmens.

According to the usaspending.gov database, the School of Agricultural and Mechanics of Southern University of Louisiana is the recipient of the grant.

“The first occurrence of menstruation occurs at the age of about 12 years and eventually ends at the age of about 51 years,” the grant note reads. “A woman will have one monthly menstrual cycle per month throughout her life, with an average of about 450 periods in her life.”

“It is also important to recognize that trans men and men with gender identity, bisexual and nonbinary people may also menstruate,” the description adds. “At any given moment, about 26% of the world’s population is menstruating.”

The study aims to “address growing problems related to menstruation”, including the potential use of natural fibers, such as cannabis, in feminine hygiene products.
