Bluesky user lobs profanity-heavy attack on Politico writer and reports him after he shared X story
A Politico reporter said he received thousands of angry, profane attacks and was briefly deleted for sharing a seemingly innocuous post about rival platform X on the progressive-leaning social media platform Bluesky.
Politico’s Michael Kruse recounts a story shared by a colleague on Bluesky about whether Democrats should continue to engage with X (formerly Twitter) now that it’s been acquired by Elon Musk and has become something of a liberal bogeyman. “The purity politics of leaving X because you don’t like Elon got the Democratic Party into trouble in the first place,” he said, citing a link to the story from an anonymous Democratic correspondent.
In response, Cruise received thousands of angry responses, which included calling him a “fucking fool,” “a f**king idiot,” a “moron,” and “f**k,” among other colorful phrases. Another user added a graphic description of where to place a running chainsaw, calling it “the best thing you could possibly do to make America a better place.”
Cruise shared the anecdote because Bluesky has a liberal reputation as a “safe space” for X, which the left has often complained has become a hateful cesspool under Musk. Cruise said he had never received so many personal attacks on X, but Bluesky users were angry when he questioned why they left Musk’s site.

Bluesky says it exists essentially as an alternative for those for whom X.com has become too toxic, but the vitriol here is overwhelmingly personal.
Cruise said he was confused by the tone of Bluesky users, if the platform’s purpose is to be an oasis of alleged toxicity.
“What exactly is a toxin? An unpleasant thought? An ugly reaction? Maybe the toxin is much bigger than Bluesky can handle. Whole social media? People writing about it? Is it even a concept? safe space — A smart Democrat texted me while this was happening, safe from whom and from what? ” he wrote.

Cruise said he didn’t get an answer from Bluesky as to why his account was deleted, but it was reinstated a short time later without any further explanation.
Since the election, Bluesky has gained millions of new accounts, many of them from left-leaning media figures fed up with X and Musk’s support of President-elect Donald Trump.
It has made headlines for its seeming focus on progressive purity, such as when the conservative satirical website The Babylon Bee came under scrutiny for sharing an article calling transgender Biden administration official Rachel Levine “Person of the Year.”
