Trump told Washington, D.C. mayor she “must clean up” homeless camps in the city

President Donald Trump said he had informed Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser that she needed to “clean up all the ugly homeless camps within the city or the federal government “will be forced to do it for her.”

In Wednesday’s Truth Society post, the president specifically quoted areas around the State Department and the White House where homeless camps need to be removed, adding that the nation’s capital “must be clean and safe!”

“If she doesn’t have the ability to do this, we will be forced to do it for her!” Trump wrote to some extent. “We want to be proud of our great capital again. Thank you Mayor Bowser for his efforts on behalf of the citizens of our country. Hope you succeed!”

Trump has previously said he supports the federal government taking over the country’s capital if it cannot be managed correctly, adding that the city cannot remain the same as foreign leaders come to towns.

“They didn’t do the job,” Trump said last month, saying “too many crimes” and “too many tents on the lawn – these grand lawns”.

Despite his criticism of the city, Trump said he personally likes the Democratic mayor. The two met in December to discuss their shared priorities for Washington, D.C., which Bowser described as a “great meeting.”

“Trump and we both want Washington, D.C. to be the best and most beautiful city in the world, and we want the capital to reflect the strength of our country,” Bowser said in December.

DC Black Lives Matter Plaza for a new look, replacing street murals as part of “evolution”

Trump’s social media post also appeared Wednesday after Bowser announced that the city will replace its controversial Black Lives Matter Square with murals from students and artists by next year’s 250th anniversary.

When the square was built in 2021, Bowser said it would be a permanent installation.

“The murals inspired millions and helped our city through a painful period, but now we cannot be distracted by meaningless congressional intervention,” Bowser’s statement said. “Cutting the devastating impact of federal work must be our number one concern.”
