Washington Democrats introduce legislation to remove George Washington from state flag

Progressive Washington state lawmakers have introduced a bill that can evacuate George Washington from the state flag.

The House of Representatives Act of 1938 was intended to create a committee that would design a new state flag that “better reflects the diversity and value of all Washingtonians.”

According to Democratic lawmakers who introduced the bill, the national flag “often faces criticism for its poor design and lacks relevance to the state’s identity.”

“The flag features detailed portraits of George Washington, making it too complex and difficult to reproduce, which violates the key national flag design principle of priority simplicity. The flag is also aesthetically unpleasant, lawmakers say, because it “uses too many colors” and its design is “outdated and uninspired.”

The bill will create a committee to develop new designs for the official national flag to reflect Washington’s “common history, resources and diverse cultural communities.”

The committee will be appointed governors from the Washington State Council of Arts, legislators in the House and Senate, secretary of state, historians, designers, cultural leaders, tribal representatives and citizen representatives from different regions of the state.

The committee will then solicit public feedback by advocacy to schools, community organizations, tribes, public forums, virtual discussions and online surveys, and then approve a new design by July 1, 2028.

Voters must approve the new flag design in the next general election before they can be used as a new state flag.

Democratic representatives Strom Peterson, Julia Reed and Greg Nance introduced the bill on February 11.

FOX28 Spokane reports that it plans to hold a public hearing on February 18 at the State Council on Government and Tribal Relations.

The proposal raised criticism from Republican lawmakers in the state.
