Mexico may sue Google for changes to the U.S. Gulf

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday that her administration decided whether to file a lawsuit against Google on Google Maps to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the U.S. Gulf.
“We’re going to wait. We’ve seen what this will mean from a legal advice perspective, but we hope they can make the revisions.”

Google renamed the waters after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change it. Now, Google-mapping U.S. users will see the “Gulf of the United States” in the app, and both of those outside the U.S. and Mexico will see the terms, the company said.
“We will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. This covers a lot of territory,” Trump said on Tuesday. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. It’s a good fit.”
Sheinbaum condemned the move, saying the Gulf of Mexico’s name has long been recognized internationally.
“What we’re asking for is to study the White House ordinance and the president signed by Donald Trump. You’ll see in that statute that it doesn’t refer to the entire Gulf.”
