China’s sci-fi spherical Death Star robot police use artificial intelligence, facial recognition to track criminals

Footage of China’s streets captures a scene straight out of science fiction – spherical drones operating alongside patrolling law enforcement officers.
Chinese robotics company Longgang Technology launched the RT-G autonomous spherical robot in a press release, calling it a “technological breakthrough” designed to assist or even replace humans in hazardous environments.
The spherical robot can operate on land and water.
The company says the robots can reach speeds of 35 km/h (about 22 mph) and can withstand up to 8,818 pounds (4 tons) of impact damage.

China’s recent use of robots shows how countries are combining technology with traditional policing methods to enhance public safety.
In the United States, New York Mayor Eric Adams launched a robot dog in April 2023.
“We want the public to know that the use of these technologies will be transparent, consistent and always done in partnership with the people we serve,” New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said at the unveiling.
