WATCH: Lawmakers refuse to reveal gender when confronted on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON — Days after President Donald Trump declared there are only two “immutable” genders: male and female, lawmakers are refusing to say how many there are.
Former President Joe Biden stopped short of defining gender as a strict binary and issued directives supporting recognition of a person’s gender identity on federal documents. This includes allowing Americans to select “X” as a gender option on their passports, alongside male and female. By contrast, Trump’s order declaring there are only two genders would reverse efforts to allow a gender different from the sex assigned at birth to be used on documents such as driver’s licenses.
After Trump issued the order, Fox News Digital surveyed lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the number of recognized genders, but most members of Congress refused to answer the question.
Asked how many genders there were, Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, told Fox: “I have a conference to attend and that’s all I’m worried about right now.”

Another Democrat, Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., told Fox News there are “two” genders, but “people are often not sure what they are.”

Trump is taking aim at several of Biden’s federal orders on gender identity, such as rescinding an order that would have allowed all qualified Americans to serve the country in a uniform manner that allowed transgender people to serve in the military.
