Roswell police crash car while responding to accident

Jan. 22—A 66-year-old man was killed Wednesday morning when his car crashed into Roswell police while responding to another call.
The incident occurred on North Main Street around 9:50 p.m., according to a Roswell Police Department social media post.
The officer was driving southbound on North Main Street, responding to a two-car collision with his lights and siren on, when a northbound Oldsmobile driven by Howard Peterson turned left and crossed the southbound traffic Road, “stopped directly in front of the RPD unit,” police said, causing the collision between Seventh and Sixth streets.
Peterson died at the hospital. The officer was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover, police said.
The officer had been with RPD for five years, one year as a police assistant and the last four as a police officer, according to RPD.
Police said an administrative investigation will be conducted to review the officer’s actions.
“The Roswell Police Department sends our thoughts and prayers to Mr. Peterson’s family,” Police Chief Lance Bateman said in a statement. “Our traffic department and internal investigation of this tragic accident will continue. Investigate to ensure the officer involved complied with department policies and procedures related to emergency operations of his department’s vehicles.”
