NBA postpones Saturday’s Lakers-Spurs, Clippers-Hornets games due to wildfires
The NBA announced that Saturday’s home games between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers have been postponed due to wildfires sweeping Southern California.
The Lakers will host the San Antonio Spurs and the Clippers will host the Charlotte Hornets.
The league has not yet announced makeup dates for those two games, and the league has not said whether more games will be affected by the fire, as both teams are scheduled to play home games on Monday and Wednesday, with the Lakers having another home game on Friday. “The NBA, Clippers and Lakers organizations have been communicating with local officials in Los Angeles and Inglewood regarding the current situation in the Los Angeles area, and the postponement of the game ensures that resources will not be diverted from wildfire response efforts,” the league said in a statement.
Some members of both teams are dealing directly with the effects of the wildfires, including Lakers coach J.J. Redick, whose family’s rental home in Pacific Palisades burned down Tuesday night, destroying many of their belongings property.
“I wasn’t prepared for what I saw,” Redick told reporters. “It was total devastation and devastation. I had to take another route to get to the house but I walked through most of the village and everything was gone. I don’t think you can ever prepare for something like this. Our Home is gone.

The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association, the players union, announced Friday a $1 million donation to provide immediate relief to the American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen and other organizations working to provide aid and recovery to victims.
The league said the purpose of the donation is to “support those impacted by this disaster,” adding that the league is “working with the Lakers and Clippers to find ways to support long-term aid and reconstruction efforts.”
A Lakers game scheduled for Thursday against the Hornets was also postponed but has not yet been rescheduled.

The Lakers are scheduled to host the Spurs again on Monday, when the Clippers host the Miami Heat. On Wednesday, the Lakers will host the Heat and the Clippers will host the Brooklyn Nets. The Lakers are also scheduled to host the Nets on Friday.
The Clippers said they expect games starting Monday to go ahead as scheduled.
“The health and safety of our community and fans remains our top priority,” the team said.
