Russian oil tanker reportedly adrift in Baltic Sea near German island

BERLIN (AP) — A Russian oil tanker is drifting in the Baltic Sea north of the German island of Rügen, German news agencies are reporting.

The dpa news agency reported on Friday that the Eventin, which is believed to be carrying about 99,000 tons of oil from Russia, was en route to Egypt.

The ship is believed to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which consists of hundreds of aging oil tankers that are dodging sanctions to keep oil revenues flowing into the Russian state budget. The sanctions were imposed following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The crew of the Panamanian-flagged tanker was also not in danger. The sailors are on board and will remain there, and no evacuation is necessary, the dpa news agency reported.
