Zelensky says alliance meeting promises $2 billion in aid

(Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Germany pledged an extra $2 billion in military aid to help its war against Russia in the latest in a series of meetings with Western allies in Kiev.

In an interview with the My-Ukraina TV channel after Thursday’s meeting, Zelensky gave no details about the aid but said 34 countries had pledged support in different aspects of the 34-month war.

“We had a very good meeting and achieved very good results. $2 billion in additional support to Ukraine,” he said in a video posted on the TV channel’s Telegram account.

The assistance covers areas such as air defense, information technology, mine clearance, navy, air force and artillery.

“All this will strengthen Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

The president did not elaborate on which countries had made the pledges.

U.S. Secretary of State Blinken has previously stated that Washington will provide an additional $500 million in military assistance to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft missiles, air-to-ground ammunition and support equipment for F-16 fighter jets.

Zelensky attended the meeting in Ramstein before meeting Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni in Rome, where he said he discussed upgrading Ukraine’s air defense systems to defend against Russian attacks, as well as plans for a push to Efforts to formulate a unified position on war issues.
